According to the UN, more than 84% of the national population already lives in cities — a scenario that intensifies the need for solutions that improve quality of life and mobility. It is in this context that the concept of the "smart city" emerges as a promising alternative, proposing the use of technologies to transform urban management and solve complex infrastructure and governance challenges.
This involves the use of tools such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), which enable the collection and real-time analysis of data to facilitate the management of areas such as security, health, and energy efficiency.
In urban mobility, for example, integrated transportation systems and real-time monitoring can reduce congestion, facilitating commutes and reducing pollutant emissions. In security, connected surveillance cameras and artificial intelligence increase monitoring accuracy and enable faster responses to risk situations.
Smart energy and water management, with sensors for monitoring and control, can reduce waste and environmental impact. And in governance, real-time data collection and availability broaden transparency and allow for more active citizen participation in public decisions.
Although significant progress has been made, the challenges of implementing smart cities in Brazil remain on the horizon. According to the Brazilian Internet of Things Association (ABINC), more than 60% of Brazilian cities lack a structured strategy to effectively adopt smart city technologies. The main obstacles include inadequate infrastructure, the need for greater connectivity, and reliance on significant investment.
To leverage the digital revolution in their favor, it is important for Brazilian cities to focus on creating public policies that encourage the use of AI and IoT technologies, as well as promoting adequate data security regulation to ensure that the transformation into a smart city proceeds responsibly.
However, realizing a smart city depends on coordinated commitment between government, the private sector, and citizens. In this sense, public-private partnerships are a fundamental piece in enabling the necessary investments, as is encouraging research and development projects in innovation.
Brazilian examples of initiatives in this direction include Cidade Pedra Branca in Greater Florianópolis/SC and Smart City Laguna in Greater Fortaleza/CE, which have stood out for adopting advanced technologies to optimize urban management and improve the quality of life for their residents.
In summary, with relentless technological evolution, we will need in the future to better seize opportunities. This way, we can reimagine the urban space and create cities truly geared toward citizens — cities that intelligently commit, in the short, medium, and long term, to transforming how urban centers are managed and experienced.
